Historical Roots
The Town of Braintree was colonized in 1625 and was initially named Mount Wollaston after Captain Wollaston. The town was renamed Braintree in 1640 after the English town of the same name. Braintree is known as being the birthplace of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and for one of the most famous signatories of the United State Declaration of Independence John Hancock, and for General Sylvanus Thayer. Braintree was also the town where the infamous 1920 armed robbery and murders committed by Ferdinando Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti took place.
Residents and visitors interested in taking a historical tour of Braintree can start at the Braintree Historical Society, which owns and operates the General Sylvanus Thayer Birthplace, the Watson Library and Research Center (Thomas Watson was the co-inventor of the telephone), The Gallivan House, the French House, and the Gilbert Bean Museum.
